How to handle facial redness

Many people struggle with red, uncomfortable skin. You may have been battling with rough, red skin or flushed cheeks, occasional breakouts, and painful swelling. If you want to relieve this unpleasant skin condition, it’s important to learn what might be behind that facial redness.

Facial redness can be caused by a variety of conditions, including:

  • Sun damage
  • Acne
  • Seborrhea (a common skin condition that presents as red, flaky patches)
  • Rosacea (a common, chronic skin condition that can look like adult acne)
  • Eczema (scaly, dry patches and cracked, itchy skin)
  • Stress
  • Sun exposure
  • Alcohol
  • Poor quality cosmetics (lots of chemicals that aren’t in there for your benefit)

Let’s take a look some healthy ways you can treat that redness and obtain a smooth, radiant complexion:

  • Stay away from irritating harmful chemicals that are often used in skin care products (the more ingredients and chemical names the product has, the worse for you it usually is)
  • Don’t overload your skin with too many active ingredients
  • Limit sun exposure
  • Don’t exfoliate more than twice a week
  • Adopt eating healthy foods and get into some exercise routines that suit you
  • Pare down your product routine – eliminate all nonessential products, including makeup to reduce allergen exposure and allow the skin to calm down. Then reintroduce products one at a time over several days or weeks to allow the offending ingredient to be discovered.

Finally, use soothing ingredients that help to reduce redness, like: allantoin, licorice root, chamomile, aloe, cucumber and essential oils, or products that contain these oils and ingredients.

Essential oils have the ability to ease inflammation associated with red skin, and calm irritation. Here are just a few of many essential oils that can help reduces and heal that redness (Always use essential oils with a carrier oil like almond oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, or grapeseed oil to dilute essential oils).

German Chamomile Essential Oil contains an anti-inflammatory compound that not only reduces redness but moisturizes to improve the skin’s texture.

Essential Oil relieves skin stress and constricts blood vessels at the skin’s surface to ease inflammation and redness. It is gentle, moisturizing and has antioxidants to help repair the skin beneath the surface while protecting from it from damage. Lavender also kills mites that have been linked to rosacea.

Frankincense Essential Oil helps lessen inflammation, is anti-bacterial, and soothes pain, making it a wonderful oil for healing the skin. Frankincense encourages production of new skin cells, collagen and elastin to strengthen the skin beneath the surface, revealing a healthier skin.

Borage Seed Oil is packed with anti-inflammatory fatty acids that reduce redness. Borage also helps hydrate dry skin and reduces itching and other symptoms of rosacea. It is a great carrier oil to use for diluting essential oils.

Geranium Essential Oil calms inflammation and encourages the production of new skin cells.

Rose Essential Oil is anti-inflammatory, making it an excellent choice for easing redness. It also has astringent benefits that reduce redness, is very hydrating, and lifts anxiety to help prevent stress-related outbreaks
